Overview & Inspiration
Welcome back to the FreeCrochet community! Today, we are exploring the Beautiful crochet flower lace motif Pattern, a delicate and versatile design combining floral shapes, open lace, and decorative stitch groups into an elegant handmade piece.
You can use this motif on its own as a coaster, ornament, table decoration, or appliqué. Alternatively, join several identical pieces to create larger projects like bags, table runners, cushion covers, shawls, and decorative panels.
Materials & Tools Checklist
- Smooth cotton or cotton-blend yarn (medium-fine crochet thread or lightweight yarn works best)
- Matching crochet hook (use a slightly smaller hook than recommended for a firmer, more defined motif)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Pins for blocking (optional)
Pattern Stitches & Abbreviations
- CH: Chain stitch (wrap yarn over hook and pull through loop on hook).
- SL ST: Slip stitch (insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook in one motion).
- SC: Single crochet (insert hook into stitch/space, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through both loops).
- DC: Double crochet (yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up loop, [yarn over, pull through two loops] twice).
- TR: Treble crochet (yarn over twice, insert hook, pull up loop, [yarn over, pull through two loops] three times).
- SP: Chain space (working space created during the previous round, such as a CH-5 SP).
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Center Ring: Begin with a magic ring (or CH 6 and join with SL ST into the first chain). Leave a yarn tail if using a magic ring to tighten the flat, circular center securely.
- Round 1: CH 3 (counts as first DC), then work 15 DC into the center ring. Join the round with SL ST into the top of the beginning CH 3 for a total of 16 DC.
- Round 2: CH 1, SC in the same stitch, CH 3, skip 1 DC, SC in the next DC. Repeat the sequence of (CH 3, skip 1 stitch, SC in next stitch) around, then join with SL ST into the first SC to create 8 small chain spaces.
- Round 3: Slip stitch into the first CH-3 SP. Inside that space work (SC, CH 2, 4 DC, CH 2, SC). Repeat this petal sequence in each remaining chain space, then join with SL ST into the first SC to complete the 8 petals.
- Round 4: Insert hook behind the petals and work SC around the SC from Round 2, then CH 5. Repeat around, anchoring each chain behind the corresponding petal, and join with SL ST.
- Round 5: Work into each CH-5 SP with the sequence: (SC, CH 2, 2 DC, 3 TR, 2 DC, CH 2, SC) to create larger outer petals with tall centers. Repeat in every chain space around.
Assembly & Finishing
Fasten off securely and weave in all remaining yarn ends using your yarn needle. For a crisp, professional finish, lightly block your finished motif with pins to open up the delicate lace spaces.
Pro Tips for Best Results
- Always make a small test sample before starting your main project to check your tension and hook size.
- Keep your chain stitches relaxed throughout the rounds to prevent the motif from curling at the edges.
- Work your stitches directly into the designated chain spaces in later rounds for smooth, accurate construction.
