Materials & Tools Checklist
- Medium-weight or light worsted cotton yarn (approx. 20-35 yards total in mustard yellow and a petal color like cream, white, pink, or sage green)
- Crochet hook in size 3.5 mm to 4.5 mm
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Measuring tape, blocking mat, and rust-resistant pins (optional)
Pattern Stitches & Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- st / sts: stitch / stitches
- sp: space
- rep: repeat
- inc: increase (work more than one stitch into the same stitch)
- FO: fasten off
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Round 1 (Center): With mustard yellow, make a magic ring. Ch 2 (does not count as a st). Work 12 dc into the magic ring. Pull tail tight to close, and join with a sl st to the top of the first dc.
- Round 2 (Center): Ch 2, work 2 dc in every st around (24 dc total). Join with a sl st and check that the circle lies flat.
- Round 3 (Center): Ch 1, work [1 sc in first st, 2 sc in next st] rep around. Finish with 36 sc total, then join with a sl st and FO the center color.
- Petals: Attach petal color to any st from Round 3. Ch 2, then work [1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc] into the same st. Ch 2, then sl st into the next st to anchor the petal.
- Repeat Petals: Rep the petal sequence around the entire center to create 12, 15, or 18 petals. Join with a sl st at the base of the first petal and FO.
Assembly & Finishing
Thread your yarn needle with the remaining tails and weave them securely into the wrong side of the coaster, changing directions at least once. Gently pull each petal into shape with your fingers, or block the finished piece for a crisp, flat floral finish.
Pro Tips for Best Results
- Always place a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round to prevent costly counting mistakes.
- Use 100% cotton yarn so the coaster absorbs moisture and withstands the heat of warm coffee mugs or tea cups.
- Check your tension: if the center ruffles, you have too many increases; if it cups, your stitches are too tight.
