Step-by-Step Instructions
- Crown – Round 1: With red yarn and MR, ch 2, work 10 hdc into ring. Pull closed and join with sl st to first hdc (10 sts).
- Crown – Rounds 2–10: Continue working hdc and even increases. Round 2: work 2 hdc in each st (20 sts). Round 3: [1 hdc, inc] around (30 sts). Round 4: [2 hdc, inc] around (40 sts). Round 5: [3 hdc, inc] around (50 sts). Rounds 6–10 follow the pattern up to [8 hdc, inc], resulting in 100 sts and a 6¾–7 inch diameter.
- Sides: Work Rounds 11–14 with 1 hdc in each st around (100 sts), creating a shallow bowl shape.
- Openwork Mesh: Round 15: Ch 3 (counts as dc + ch 1), [skip 1 st, dc in next st, ch 1] around (50 dc, 50 ch-1 sps). Rounds 16–19: Sl st to first ch-1 sp, ch 3, [dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] around for 5 total mesh rounds.
- Brim & Edging: Return to solid hdc stitches, increasing slightly to flare the brim. Finish with a delicate white edging border using your matching white cotton yarn and FO.
Assembly & Finishing
Weave in all loose ends securely with your tapestry needle. Block your finished hat lightly to define the mesh stitches and smooth out the brim.
Pro Tips for Best Results
- Always make a gauge swatch first (aim for 16 hdc and 12 rounds per 4 inches) to ensure your adult hat fits a 21–23 inch head circumference.
- Use smooth cotton yarn so the delicate lace-inspired mesh openings stay crisp and visible.
- Add a light fabric stiffener if you prefer your bucket hat brim to hold a stiffer, more structured shape.
