Materials & Tools Checklist
- Fine cotton or cotton-blend yarn in red, white, and cream/beige
- Crochet hook (2.0–3.0 mm range)
- Fiberfill for stuffing the head
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Stitch markers
- Optional small beads and a length of hanging cord
Pattern Stitches & Abbreviations
- MR: Magic Ring
- ch: Chain
- sl st: Slip Stitch
- sc: Single Crochet
- hdc: Half Double Crochet
- dc: Double Crochet
- inc: Increase (two stitches in one)
- dec: Decrease (two stitches joined)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Red Dress & Bodice: Start with an MR and work 6 sc into the ring; close it. Work 2 sc in each stitch (12 sts). Crochet several sc rounds without increases for about 2.5–3.5 cm to form the compact bodice.
- Skirt Expansion: Begin regular increases using [sc 1, inc] around, a plain round, then [sc 2, inc] around. Switch from sc to hdc or dc (e.g., [2 dc, dc inc] around) to create a flared bell shape until the dress measures 5–7 cm from the waist. Fasten off.
- Waistband & Arms: Join white yarn around the narrowest waist section and work one round of sl st or sc. For arms, ch 12–18 and sl st back along the chain; attach one to each side of the upper body.
- Head & Hat: Using cream yarn, make an MR with 6 sc, increase to 12, then to 18. Work plain rounds, stuff lightly, and shape. Crochet a small Santa-style hat in red and white to top the head.
Assembly & Finishing
Sew the head securely to the top of the bodice, attach the delicate white wings to the back, and secure your hanging cord at the top so the ornament displays nicely.
Pro Tips for Best Results
- Maintain consistent tension so the skirt, wings, sleeves, and hat look perfectly balanced.
- Avoid overstuffing the upper body and head to keep the ornament lightweight enough for tree branches.
- Swap the red and white yarns for pastels and add decorative beads if you prefer a whimsical fairy variation.
