Overview & Inspiration
Welcome to the ultimate modular project! This versatile pattern transforms textured crochet squares into stunning blankets, bags, and home decor.
The standout feature is a 3D raised spiral inside a structured square. Work in cozy neutrals or vibrant yarn palettes to match your style.
Materials & Tools Checklist
- Medium-weight cotton (best for structured bags) or cotton blend/acrylic yarn (best for flexible blankets)
- Crochet hook sized 4 mm to 5 mm (adjust for your tension)
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Stitch markers
- Optional fabric lining for tote bags
Pattern Stitches & Abbreviations
- MR: Magic ring
- ch: Chain
- sl st: Slip stitch
- sc: Single crochet
- hdc: Half double crochet
- dc: Double crochet
- inc: Increase (work two stitches into the same stitch)
- BLO / FLO: Back loop only / Front loop only
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start the center with an MR, ch 1, work 8 sc into the ring, pull tight to close, and sl st to join.
- Work 2 sc in each stitch around to form a flat circular foundation.
- Continue increasing gradually in later rounds by alternating 1 sc and 2 sc to keep the disc flat.
- Create the raised spiral by attaching yarn near the outer edge and working surface sl st in a spiral path toward the center.
- Transform the circle into a square by attaching yarn to the outer round, ch 2, and working hdc or dc stitches around while planning four corners.
- Form corners by working (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into the same space, repeating this four times around the motif.
- Strengthen the square shape with a round of ch 2, working one hdc or dc into each stitch and repeating the corner sequence.
- Finish with a decorative border round of sc into each stitch and 3 sc into each corner space.
Assembly & Finishing
Weave in all yarn tails on the wrong side and block each motif by pinning the corners evenly to ensure dozens of squares fit together neatly.
Pro Tips for Best Results
- Always make one sample square first to check your tension, dimensions, and hook size.
- Keep surface spiral stitches relaxed so they don’t pull the background fabric inward.
- Use an sc in BLO round for the outer border if you want extra structure for a sturdy tote bag.
