Crochet Flower Cross Pattern

Overview & Inspiration

Welcome to the FreeCrochet community! The Crochet Flower Cross Pattern is a stunning way to combine a symbolic shape with the warmth and texture of handmade crochet flowers.

This project is ideal for wall decor, prayer corners, or meaningful handmade gifts. By joining individual floral motifs, you can easily play with color palettes like dusty pink, turquoise, cream, and mustard yellow.

Materials & Tools Checklist

  • Medium-weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in 4-5 coordinating colors (e.g., dusty pink, turquoise, cream, mustard yellow, and a neutral border shade)
  • Crochet hook sized 3.5 mm to 4.5 mm
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends and joining motifs
  • Small scissors
  • Stitch markers

Pattern Stitches & Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sp = space

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Make the Flower Center: Start with a magic ring or chain 4, joining with a sl st to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 12 dc into the ring, and join with a sl st.
  2. Form the Petals: Attach your petal color, ch 2, and work a basic petal of 3 dc worked together followed by a short ch and sl st. Repeat evenly around to create 5-6 petals. (Alternatively, use puff stitches for a raised texture).
  3. Square the Motif: Attach the background color between petals. Work corners of 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, and use shorter groups of dc along the sides to turn the circle into a square.
  4. Add Border Rounds: Work another round in the background color (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corners), then finish with a final round of sc (1 sc in each stitch, 3 sc in each corner space) for a clean edge. Fasten off and weave in ends. Aim for each square to measure 8 to 10 cm.

Assembly & Finishing

Lay your completed flower squares on a flat surface in a cross formation. Join the sections securely using your preferred method, resulting in a finished cross measuring approximately 25 to 35 cm wide and 35 to 45 cm tall.

Pro Tips for Best Results

  • Always make a small test motif first to check your dimensions and tension.
  • Use smooth cotton yarn to give the flowers clear definition and help the cross hold its shape.
  • Keep all square motifs consistent in size so they join together evenly.
